From "The Sky" Horse Racing newspaper:

Another day at the track. Another day of horseflesh giving me the proverbial curry. I'd even been given the tip for the last before the first. What happens ? It gets up and salutes and yours truly had forgotten all about it by the time the race was won.

By then I'd had enough of horse flesh, or any animal flesh…… Driving along Bridge Rd a restaurant caught my eye. The Nirvana Vegetarian Café, specialising in Indian curries. I couldn't say I was experiencing Nirvana as I was driving along but. It looked to fit the bill, no animal flesh, inexpensive and a variety of curry flavours. … The Nirvana Indian Vegetarian Café had me in Nirvana once my meal arrived…..In two words superb.

Thanks to the Nirvana Vegetarian Café my day was no longer 'one of those days'. The décor is understated but authentically Indian, the service is wonderfully friendly and their prices are absolute value for money. The meals are hearty and full of flavour. Even avowed meat eaters won't feel the need to catch a pizza on the way home after a meal at the Nirvana.

Eatwell: a guide to eating well and wisely in Melbourne

The Vegetarian Nirvana Café presents itself as no run of the mill Indian eat in/takeaway. The modest surroundings are washed, pressed, cleaned, polished and well turned out.

From the hand picked church pews to the delicately steaming bain marie, there is a charming 'first-establishment' air about the place. The proprietors have a personal preference for vegetarian food and deliberately set up a reputable café that wouldn't make vegetarians feel like second class citizens…..

The Age Good Food Guide 2000

The décor may be sparse, but keep your eyes on the plate and Nirvana chef Sharma's delicious, traditional Indian vegetarian food. The menu features typical sub-continental fare, reworked for both vegetarians and vegans.

We love the samosas, which are almost entirely oil free. We can also recommend the palak paneer, a spinach and curd cheese dish with a wonderful texture. The service is especially good, and the owner Deepak Prakash is likely to wander over to your table after the meal for a chat.
